New ARF Report: Impacts of Organics Diversion Programs on Landfill Gas Generation

COVER-CharlestonSC-WEB

A new report published by the SWANA Applied Research Foundation (ARF) provides solid waste managers with up-to-date information and guidance on the impacts of food waste and other organics diversion programs on the generation of landfill gas (LFG).

According to the US EPA, less organic waste in a landfill will:

  • Lower emissions of methane and non-methane organic compounds
  • Reduce odors
  • Minimize leachate generation
  • Conserve landfill space

However, a key concern among landfill managers is that removing additional organics from landfill disposal could jeopardize the economic viability of:

  • Recovering LFG for electricity generation
  • Production of renewable natural gas

The full report, Impacts of Organics Diversion Programs on Landfill Gas Generation is currently only available to SWANA ARF subscribers. SWANA members receive free access to ARF industry reports one year after publication.
