Introducing SWANA's Learning & Career Development Newsletter!
November 2, 2023
Welcome to the L&D Times!
You’re probably asking, “What’s up with the name L&D Times? What’s L&D?”
Very simply, L&D stands for “Learning and Development,” a term commonly used to describe the many ways nonprofit organizations, like SWANA, help their members and other industry professionals grow in their roles and careers.
We built this newsletter to promote a culture of continuous learning. Through it, we’ll help you be intentional about your career and professional development by sharing knowledge, tools, and resources that will help you build new competencies, expand your professional opportunities, and inspire your career growth.
In this inaugural issue of the L&D Times, we celebrate the success of new certification holders, share news about exciting collaborations with federal agencies and state institutions, and connect you with members of the L&D team.
Share with us what you think of this first issue and what you’d like to learn more about!
SWANA Engaged to Develop Training for Tribal Solid Waste Professionals
SWANA and Northern Arizona University’s Institute for Tribal Environmental Professionals (ITEP) have been engaged by the Indian Health Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to improve the technical, managerial, and financial capacity of tribal solid waste programs in the United States.
The government recognizes that tribal environmental program staff need exposure to a diverse range of training to develop competencies to safely operate, maintain, and manage solid waste facilities and programs.

Celebrating Success: Honoring Our New Certification Holders
SWANA proudly recognizes 89 individuals who have demonstrated their dedication, knowledge, and expertise in solid waste management by earning a coveted SWANA certification. They know that certification is not just a credential; it demonstrates one’s commitment to lifelong learning and to expanding professional and personal competencies.
SWANA certification places them among an elite group of solid waste professionals who have exhibited unwavering commitment to professional and career development, investing countless hours to study, preparation, and rigorous examination. Their success reflects their enduring pursuit of excellence in our industry. Congratulations!
As Senior Director for Learning and Development, Arminda Valles-Hall sets the strategic direction for SWANA’s certification, education, and training efforts.
